Cycling is such a great activity. It's as simple as getting on your bike and heading out on the road, trail, or dirt. You can compete in organised races, or just cruise along at your own speed and find your own route.
BikeNZ can help you enjoy the ride in a number of ways.
We have a recreational membership programme for those that like to ride for fun, and in a non-competitive environment.
We also support the development of cycling as a sport, so if you have a competitive edge, this might be for you!
We look at cycling in 3 groups - Recreational Cycling, Sport Cycling and Every Day Cycling. What ever way you're on a bike, we're looking out for you!
If you're new to the whole cycling scene then head over to the Ridestrong site - New to Cycling section where you'll find first hand tips, and can ask for help! Cyclists are generally a very excited bunch only too happy to help others discover the passion for the pedals!
Finding people to ride with!
There are loads of people out riding all the time! From clubs, organised bunch rides from your local bike shop (LBS) or even lunch time rides from cafe's. Find people to ride with
It doesn't matter if you're a seasoned professional or a new rider, joining your local cycling club is easy, cheap and can help do great things for your riding skills.
Clubs run lots of great events, they'll often have coaches (or at least seasoned riders with great advice!) and provide heaps of fun activities to help you achieve your best in cycling. Find a cycling club to join
Recreational Cycling
BikeNZ has launched it's recreational membership programme, RideStrong. This programme has a separate website (www.ridestrong.org.nz), and you'll be able to find lots of information about how to get started in cycling, places to ride, and how to fix your bike. You'll also be able to take part in discussions, find people to ride with, and have your voice heard as we strive to make cycling a safer, and more enjoyable activity for all.
The site is free to register with, so head on over and RideStrong with us.
Sport Cycling
Our member organisations are responsible for organising the competitive side of cycling in the sporting disciplines of BMX, Mountain Bike, Road and Track.
If you think you may be the next Hayden Roulston or Sarah Walker then the first thing you need to do is find and join a club in your area. Pick what type of riding you'd like to do (left-hand links), and then click the 'find a club' link.
Depending on what type of riding you decide to do, you may also need a licence to race with. Information on race licences can be found here.
Everyday Cycling
BikeNZ recognises that lots of us ride as a form of transport, and cycling is an everyday part of your life.
BikeNZ is working closely with national government departments to help raise the profile of cycling as a sustainable transport option, and to assist with delivering programmes to help make cycling an everyday activity for an increasing number of people.
