2025 UCI BMX Racing World Championships – Copenhagen, Day Two
Cambridge teenager Lily Greenough has claimed the UCI BMX Racing World Championship title in the junior women’s category, delivering a dominant and composed performance in wet and treacherous conditions on Day Two in Copenhagen.
The 17-year-old showed exceptional skill and focus, winning both her quarterfinal and semifinal with ease before putting on a clinical display in the final. Launching out of the gate with a textbook holeshot, Greenough controlled the race from start to finish on a soaked and slippery track to secure the coveted W1 plate.
Greenough, who won silver in 2024, was thrilled to upgrade to gold:
“Honestly, it’s incredible. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. Keeping it together in the wet conditions all day – unbelievable. I can’t believe it yet.”
With constant rain throughout the day, conditions on the track were a significant factor. Greenough said it was about adapting and riding smart:
“I had to be cautious through the corners and aware of every movement so I didn’t slip. It was about staying calm and riding the best lines in those conditions.”
She also credited her support team, including family and coach Matt Cameron, for helping her execute the perfect race plan.
“Having my coach there for lane choices and line selection made all the difference. The support from my family was massive. It still hasn’t sunk in – this is a dream come true.”
Jack Greenough (Cambridge), Lily’s brother, impressed in men’s under-23, winning his quarterfinal and finishing fourth in his semi to make the final. A bold recovery move on the first corner set him up, but a misjudged jump on the second straight in the soggy conditions ended his podium hopes.
Finn Cogan (Cambridge) also impressed in junior men, winning his one-eighth final and placing third in the quarterfinal. A 7th place in the semi saw his run end just short of the final.
In elite racing, both Rico Bearman and Michael Bias were eliminated in the quarterfinals, in what was a tough day for many top riders worldwide.
Leila Walker made it through to the elite women’s semifinal, finishing 6th, while Megan Williams (Rotorua) was edged out in the quarterfinal.
In under-23 women, Brooke Penny (Te Awamutu) narrowly missed a semifinal spot, finishing just 0.06s outside qualification in her quarterfinal.
