Sarah Walker Named Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit - Recognised for Her Outstanding Contributions to BMX and Sports Governance

BMXNZ is proud to celebrate Sarah Walker’s appointment as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her exceptional service to BMX and leadership in global sports governance.

Born in Whakatāne and raised in Kawerau, Sarah began racing at the age of 10 and has gone on to become one of New Zealand’s most decorated BMX riders. With 12 World Championship medals to her name, including gold in 2007 and 2009, Sarah also made history as New Zealand’s first Olympic medallist in BMX with her silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Sarah’s influence extends far beyond racing. She was a driving force behind Rotorua’s $1.16 million BMX track and helped bring the UCI BMX Racing World Cup to New Zealand last year. A founding member of the current Rotorua BMX Club, Sarah says, “That’s definitely my home track and home club.”

She continues to give back through governance, representing New Zealand on the IOC Athletes’ Commission since 2016 and now serving as Second Vice-Chair. She led the creation of the IOC Athletes’ Rights and Responsibilities Declaration, which is helping shape athlete welfare across the globe.

Despite years of injuries and challenges, Sarah’s resilience has been unwavering. “I didn’t give up on myself,” she said of her 2018 World Cup podium finish. “It was an acknowledgment of believing in myself.”

While now focused on raising her children, Sarah remains passionate about shaping the future of sport. “I did BMX because I loved it, and I gave everything to it. Being honoured for something I love is very special.”

BMXNZ congratulates Sarah on this well-deserved recognition — her legacy continues to inspire.
